A reasonably common thing we hear from our patients is “If I would have known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself”.
We have always emphasized the short term advantages of a good approach to life for example more energy, better sense of well-being, more self confidence, but now we can even say that you may even live longer!
It’s correct that the earlier in life you start eating a healthy diet, exercising and achieving a proper weight, the better off you’ll be. However, evidence demonstrates that even shedding pounds when you are middle age will also lead to a longer life. Researchers from Harvard released a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine that looked at body mass index (BMI) and death in about 19,000 male Harvard graduates. Though the study actually had restrictions, the largest one being that only men were examined, it’s a huge number of people with a very long follow-up (over 56 years). Some of their findings aren’t shocking. Early adulthood obesity led straight to an almost double likelihood of heart disease death. Likewise, being obese in the middle years also raises the danger of death from heart disease by about 60%. Even so, the most fascinating finding was that people who were overweight when young but were regular weight in their middle years did not have a rise in heart disease death.
This is a very important finding since it adds further evidence that losing pounds, even in your middle years, will add years to your life and reduce your risk of heart disease.
So if you are overweight, no matter your age you can improve your life with some straightforward changes. Do not let the chance pass you by.
